This screen is a primer on how to use your E-Mail efficiently. You can always return to this screen by clicking the Help-link in the list underneath your folders.

Reading Mail

You open and read mail by clicking on it in the pane above this one, where all the messages in the selected folder are listed. If the folder contains no messages, the pane will display a "This folder is empty"-message.

Once you click on a message to read it, it will be highlighted until you switch to another folder or message.

E-Mail messages are shown in this pane, which is the main mail window. When no message is selected, it will be empty or showing this document.

Your messages are sorted with the most recent ones on top by default, but you can change that by clicking on the column headers. Incoming E-Mail will always be shown on top until you exit the folder where the message arrived.

If the message contains one or more attachments, they will be shown in the middle section dividing this pane and the message list, along with information about who sent you the E-Mail and when. You can click on the attachment links to download and save them.

Folders

The pane to the left is the Folder-window. Folders are where your mail is stored. By default, incoming messages are put in your Inbox, and when you send an E-Mail to someone else, a copy is stored in the Sent-folder. Deleted messages are first put in the Trash, but if you delete anything in your Trash folder, it is gone forever!

You select the folder you wish to view by clicking on it, and if you right-click anywhere in the Folder-window, a popup menu that lets you perform Folder actions will appear. You can create new folders with this menu, and you can also delete folders but you cannot delete the four default folders, Inbox, Drafts, Sent and Trash. Personal folders are useful for filtering E-Mail, more about that in the Filters-section!

The Drafts-folder is special, if you select a message in the Drafts-folder and click "Composse" in the main toolbar, the message will appear as when you saved it so you can continue writing it and sending it when you are finished. More about composing in the next section!

Sending Mail

To send mail, click the Compose-button. A new window will open, where you can type your message and optionally attach files. When clicking the Attach-button, you will be presented with a dialog where you can choose a file to upload and attach to your message.
Large files take longer to upload, but once the green progress bar shown when uploading has disappeared, you can send your message. You can also choose to save your message to the Drafts-folder, and resume it at a later time.
If you wish to style your E-Mail message with colors and text effects, you can use the toolbar above the typing area to modify the look and feel of your message. Try highlighting some text and clicking on the buttons to see different effects!

A quick way of replying to messages and forwarding messages to other people is the popup menu in the message list pane, which appears when you right-click. It always operates on the currently selected message, and lets you manipulate it easily and efficiently.

You can also reply to messages and forward them by using the buttons in the main toolbar. The buttons will be grayed-out and will not work unless a message is selected.

Filters

Filters allow you to change how incoming E-Mail messages are treated. You can access the Filter-window by clicking on "Filters" in the folder pane, upon which a dialog will appear.
This dialog lets you add and manage customized filters to deliver incoming mail to specific folders. You can also choose to immediately delete messages that meet a certain criteria, or forward them to another E-Mail address. Create your filter by using the drop-down boxes until you are satisfied, then click the button to create the filter.

You can delete filters by clicking the Delete-button in the list under the drop-down boxes. A good idea is to create personal folders and filter messages to them to keep your E-Mail organized!

Options

If you click on the Mail Options-link in the folder pane, you will be brought to a window that lets you customize many aspects of your E-Mail experience. There are several pages in the dialog, all accessible by clicking on the tabs to the far left. You can for instance create a signature containing your contact information, to be placed at the bottom of all outgoing E-Mail.

You can also find out how to use another E-Mail application, such as Outlook, Eudora or Thunderbird, with your mail account. The system supports SMTP for sending mail and POP3 for receiving mail. If your account is configured for remote access, you can find the server details in the fourth tab from the top.

The system uses POP-before-SMTP authentication, which means that you will have to check your mail before sending, to avoid spam and unauthorized access. If you click "Send and Receive" in Outlook immediately after starting it, it is done automatically. Other mail programs have similar methods of making sure you can always send mail with POP-before-SMTP servers. Your session only lasts ten minutes, after that you will have to re-check your mail to be able to send mail.
